21-in-2012: purple jersey dress

Wintry weather usually inspires dark and drab outfits but I'm still stuck on the color schemes of autumn (most likely due to the temperate climate around here, and yes, I much prefer balmy winters to snowy ones, I don't care how pretty all that white stuff is on Christmas morning).  The orange, purple, brown and teal together remind me of crisp mornings followed by golden afternoons, cinnamon gum, crunchy fallen leaves and pumpkin spice lattes.  I can't really explain how this outfit reminds me of those things, I mean I've never even tasted a pumpkin spice latte and I don't even like cinnamon gum, but these colors subconsciously conjure up those images.  I'm not the only one who associates smells, tastes, experiences and emotions to clothing color schemes, right?  Is this some sort of blogger synesthesia?

I have a penchant for solid-colored jersey dresses and a sack full of jersey knit material in various jewel tones, so over the long weekend I made this simple dress based on a red one that I often wear.  I love the 3/4 sleeves and casual fit of the dress; I just made it Sunday and it's already becoming one of the rotating favorites in my closet.  I got off work 6 hours ago and I'm still wearing it- it's that comfortable.

I'm including this last photo to show off the waist construction for inquisitive minds.  It's basically a skirt banded with thin elastic attached to a fitted top.  Much simpler process than I expected it to be, and that stretchy waistband makes this the perfect buffet-date dress.

well, I would love some snow, but hey the warmer weather is fine as well :) Love wearing all those skirts! You are one talented girl and you proved it once again with this pretty dress. The color is perfect for grey weather and it suits you so well also in this bit longer version!! Love!!

I Love the color combination of that purple and turquoise! I'm wearing a dress at the moment which is very similar to the dress color you are wearing. Never thought of wearing turquoise with it!

I'm so glad you included the last picture- I was curious what kind of waist you had decided to do. And it has sleeves! This is a totally awesome dress, and a great outfit- I've yet to do anything super adventurous in the sewing department, but I'm hoping to start doing more (and tackle three/quarter length sleeves). Also, where did you get all your jersey fabric? I'm nervous about buying fabric online without getting to touch and see it first, but my local jo-ann's just doesn't have a ton of great jersey material, so I'm always interested in where people get there fabrics from.

You are ever so talented and yes, I think of these things too when I get dressed. Additionally, you are wearing nearly all the same colors as my wedding colors!

lol Buffet date. I love it. The colors suit you perfectly.

And seriously, if I followed my blogger synesthesia at this point, my color palette would be white. Ironic, considering that's supposed to be a summer color.

I love the color combination. My favorite color is purple so I love your dress. You did a great job making it. It looks like something I'd pick up in the store.

TIffany I love this outfit! Especially the hand crafted touches! And like you... I associate colors with foods and tastes and smells. I think its because I spend so much time cooking that my clothing resembles food instead of fashion sometime....who knows. Anyway I saw your feature on Gracey's blog and LOVED it : ) Maybe you can check my out sometime too!
